Slash pile burning to take place in Breckenridge on Feb. 4

Crews with Summit Fire & EMS, the Red, White and Blue Fire Protection District, the U.S. Forest Service, Summit County Open Space, the Summit County Sheriff’s office plan to partner with the town of Breckenridge Tuesday, Feb. 4 to burn slash piles, according to a news release from the town.

The burning will take place at the Airport Road Open Space on Airport Road in Breckenridge, with ignitions set to begin around 11 a.m. Ventilation rates are expected to be highly favorable throughout the week which should limit smoke impacts on the community, the news release states.

If conditions remain favorable Tuesday, the piles will be allowed to burn and smolder unattended overnight. Fire management personnel will remain on-scene during the day to monitor smoke impacts and fuel consumption and smoke and flames will be visible during the day, according to the release.

Monitoring will occur periodically over the next few days until the piles are out and the town of Breckenridge asks those who see smoke and fire not to call 911. The purpose of the pile burning is to reduce fuel loading that occurred during hazard tree and wildfire hazard fuels reduction, the release states.
