Slowdown: August EisenhowerTunnel traffic lowest since 1995

FRISCO – For the first time since 1996, fewer than 1 million vehicles passed through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels on I-70 during the month of August. The total number for the month was 993,762, which was 53,883 fewer vehicles than in August 2004. This represents the lowest August traffic count since 1995.Labor Day traffic also showed a significant decrease. Over the four-day Labor Day weekend, 153,605 vehicles traveled through the tunnel, which indicates a decrease of 7,415 vehicles from last year’s Labor Day figures. This year’s numbers are the lowest since 1996.However, overall tunnel traffic figures have increased for the year. As of August 31, 2005, there was a tunnel traffic increase of 95,254 vehicles over 2004, based on a year-to-date tally. The Colorado Department of Transportation attributes the decline of tunnel traffic to road closures caused by the rockslide west of Idaho Springs, which occurred early in August. Another factor, predictably, was the rise in gas prices over the Labor Day weekend.Keely Brown can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 203, or at kbrown@summitdaily.com.
