Smearing is bad, but Republicans just as guilty

Jeremy Cole, Breckenridge

In response to Maggie Butler’s letter (SDN, Nov. 5) concerning the Democrats’ smearing of the president during the recent presidential campaign, I have to say that I agree strongly that campaigning in America is sadly negative. Most candidates seem to be more interested in telling us why their opponent is the wrong choice, rather than why he or she is the right one. But come on, Maggie, do you really think the Republican Party ran a clean campaign? We are only just now learning of Bush’s agenda for his second term – why wasn’t that part of his campaign?Because he was too busy slamming Kerry, that’s why. If you truly think the Democratic party was more guilty than the Republican party of smear tactics, I only have one answer for you: They had more ammunition. The only thing lacking was their aim.
