Smith: In praise of Summit County Seniors
April 14, 2009
We have been coming to Breckenridge for over 30 years, and have enjoyed the area as tourists. This year we came for more than a week or two, in fact for close to three months. Our intention was to get part-time jobs to help defray costs. Unfortunately by the time we got here in January there were no jobs left, and no regular volunteer opportunities. So we joined the Summit County Senior Center, where we have meet so many welcoming people.
The center offers a myriad of activities at very reasonable prices. I started by playing bridge and from there got into bridge lessons. My husband participated in the Great Decision Course. We attended wonderful dinners and a luncheon that included informative programs. One of the highlights was a very well-run program called The 50+Winter Games. We tried sports like biathlon (something I never thought I would do!) a snow shoe race, a snowball throw and other events.
So besides enjoying alpine and cross country skiing and snowshoeing, all of the other activities have been great fun, and we recommend anyone in that 50+ age group should join the SCSC to broaden their exposure to wonderful people and events. The other observation we would like to applaud is the customer service at Safeway, their employees are awesome ” all businesses should be run so well! Thanks to everyone who has made us feel so welcome.
