Smoke-free means good health for all

Ellie Rogers - Breckenridge

I encourage readers to consider voting yes on Referred Question 1B to make Summit County smoke-free.

Although I agree that government should be limited, I disagree with those who argue that the passage of 1B infringes on anyone’s freedoms. Instead, it gives more freedom to all individuals by protecting the health of everyone.

As you run your errands or go to work today, you may not realize that the laws are already protecting your freedom to remain healthy including the Indoor Clean Air Act.

Notice there is no one smoking in Target, Wal-Mart, at the gas station or on the airplane. Yet opponents of 1B regard smoking to be so much more a personal right when eating and drinking around others.

Why? If you think about it, you realize that restaurants and bars have been an exception to nonsmoking laws for far too long. In May, my sister-in-law stopped breathing due to an asthma attack that was triggered by secondhand smoke in a restaurant and almost lost her life.

What law was protecting her freedom to breathe? I no longer bowl and visit many of my favorite bars and restaurants because the secondhand smoke is too dangerous.

As an ex-smoker, I understand the desire to smoke when drinking, eating and socializing. But it is a desire and an addiction, not a right or a freedom.

Restaurants have remained an exception to smoking restrictions for far too long. Dear smokers, I know that many of you would like to quit. Quitting is much easier in a smoke-free environment.
