SmokeFree Summit blowing smoke, invading rights of business owners

Matt Shelton - Dillon

Enough already. While the smoking debate continues in the pages of this publication, I cannot help but notice that most of the proponents of the smoking ban printed in your paper, especially lately, are representatives of SmokeFree Summit.

Not only is this group trying to nanny the rest of us with its ballot referendum, it is also showing up in the opinion pages time and time and time – again, preaching to us as if we were children.

It uses contentious “facts” about second-hand smoke and its “factual” risks to nonsmokers.

There are documented studies supporting its “facts” as well as documented studies debunking them, but you will never hear about the latter from these people.

They are all for choice as long your choice agrees with theirs. Their favorite slogan is, “Smoking is optional, breathing is not.”

That is true at its core but that is a fallacious argument in this context.

There is a choice for those who do not wish to encounter second-hand smoke. Go where it isn’t smoky, be it a restaurant or be it a county. Plain and simple.

There truly is nothing more to it than that. Get out of the lives of business owners and individuals who choose to pollute themselves.

Move to Vermont, move to California, move somewhere where the fascists already have control of people’s lives.

In a land growing increasingly more regulated, the Summit County anti-smoking ballot referendum Nov. 4 (Referred Question 1B) is a law that is unnecessary and intrusive.
