Smoking ban burns a smoking tourist

David PaulBelton, Mo.

I just returned home a few days ago from my second annual summer visit to Summit County, and for the most part, I enjoyed it as much as last year’s visit. I live near Kansas City and I really like to go out to Colorado every summer to vacation and will go back to Colorado next summer as well. But next summer, I won’t return to Summit County. I’ll go elsewhere in Colorado. Why? I was burned by the smoking ban.I am not a heavy smoker and I am only an occasional drinker. But when I do drink, I want to smoke. I am 48 years old. The last time I drank and drove was when I was in high school. The last time I was in a bar was at the Holiday Inn in Frisco when I stayed there last summer. On vacation, I like to use the hotel bar, relax, unwind, drink and smoke. It is the only time of the year anyone will ever find me in a bar. This summer, at a different hotel, I was greeted by a no smoking sign and I didn’t bother going in. Instead, I had two beers out of my ice chest each night and sat and drank, smoked and chatted with fellow tourists on the outdoor patio. As far as I can tell, this was a lose-lose situation for both the tourists and tourism. For me, I really would have preferred to part with a few bucks for the beer each night and five bucks for the service. For tourism, they lost out on the profits and the tips.Well, since vacations are just that, vacations away from your usual routine and since I can’t vacation like I want to, then I’ll be vacationing elsewhere in Colorado next summer. Sorry Summit County, you burned me with your smoking ban, and now I am taking my business elsewhere.
