SMS architect shows addition design

FRISCO – Clayton Cole of Slaterpaull Architects, the firm designing the new addition at the middle school, presented the firm’s near-complete drafts of the school’s new appearance.”It’s been a project of fun and challenge, with lots of complications,” Cole said, noting that, at this point, the firm is beyond schematic design and into the detail work and computer drafting portion of the project, which is set to begin in the spring and be completed by the fall of 2008. Slaterpaull Architects has focused on building the school with routes for natural ventilation and ample natural light. Unlike the current sprawling, maze-like building, Cole and his colleagues designed the new building with flow in mind. He reported that the nightmarish parking situation had been solved amid many sighs of relief from the board. The addition itself will center on two small learning communities of 450 students each and add some 172,000 square feet to the current 200,000-square-foot structure. The south rotundas, commons, offices, media center, electives area and pool will be demolished, and the north end will be renovated, as will the auditorium and central gym.
