Snow totals: Colorado mountains receive season-high snowfall after holiday weekend blizzard
The weather over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend brought multiple feet of snow, breaking a dry weather cycle for many of Colorado’s most popular resort towns.
OpenSnow reported last week that there would be “difficult to impossible travel conditions” throughout the holiday weekend, but it did not keep people off the roads. Interstate I-70 was flooded with people looking to enjoy the powder, but most spent more time in their vehicles than on the slopes.
Some areas saw so much snow that Colorado avalanche experts warned of a major uptick in avalanche danger for backcountry skiers. An avalanche even closed down Berthoud Pass on U.S. Highway 40 near Winter Park Ski Resort Jan. 14 and buried 10 cars.
