A weeklong dry spell finally broke over the weekend, with winter flurries delivering several inches of fresh snow to Summit County ski areas.

Ski trail openings at mountain resorts have slowed in recent weeks due to the lack of precipitation, with some having to close runs and wait for more powder.

While the county’s snowpack has increased from where it was this time last week, it remains around the 11th percentile, which is generally about 60-70% percent of the 30-year median, according to historic weather data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Between Friday, Jan. 5, and Monday, Jan. 8, Breckenridge Ski Resort and Loveland Ski Area received the most snow accumulation of nearby resorts, each with 8 inches, according to data from OpenSnow.com. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Copper Mountain Resort each received 7 inches in that same time frame, while Keystone Resort received 4 inches.

There are multiple chances for winter storms this week, and snow totals are expected to increase significantly this weekend, with county ski areas predicted to net double-digit accumulation by early next week. The snow is set to be accompanied by below-average temperatures, with lows reaching the single digits for most of the week.
