Soap Box Derby car kits ready to order

DILLON – The town of Dillon will host the eighth annual Summit Colorado Soap Box Derby Race June 14, and would-be participants should order their car kits soon.

The gravity-powered car race travels down Lake Dillon Drive.

In addition to ordering car kits, participants should start thinking about finding sponsorships to help offset costs.

The cars are ordered from Akron, Ohio, in kit form. The kits can be assembled by the racer and his or her parents or sponsors in just one or two weekends. The super stock cars take slightly longer to build than the stock cars.

The kits include everything needed to assemble the car except the Z-glas wheels and weights.

New this year, the Soap Box Derby headquarters in Akron has expanded the age range for racers. All boys and girls who live in Colorado and are between the ages of 8-17 as of Aug. 1 are eligible to compete in the race.

The general guidelines when choosing a vehicle are height and weight of the child. Generally, kids up to 5’3″ and weighing no more than 125 pounds race in the stock division. Youngsters measuring up to 6 feet and weighing up to 150 pounds race in the super stock division.

Racers in stock and super stock divisions will do battle in double elimination heats, trying to earn a trip to Akron to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby World Championships.
