Soap box derby races in Dillon today

The Ninth Annual Soap Box Derby takes place today on Lake Dillon Drive in downtown Dillon. Race cars are pulled by gravity down Lake Dillon Drive, reaching speeds up to 25 miles per hour. Races begin about 9:30 a.m., with the championship races taking place at approximately 3 p.m. Youngsters, ages 8-17, from all over the state of Colorado will take part in the stock division and super stock division races. Races are run in double-elimination competition, ensuring the fun and excitement will last all day long.The champion of each division will go onto the All American Soap Box Derby finals in Akron, Ohio, in July.Pug Ryan’s Steakhouse and Brewery will be on hand for the ninth consecutive year selling “Derby Dogs” and sodas throughout the day. All proceeds from the “Derby Dogs” will benefit the Soap Box Derby. Jeff Westcott of Maverick Sports Promotions will be timing and emceeing the day’s activities and races.
