Social studies teacher has the right to express himself in a letter to the editor

I write this letter in support of what I know to be one of the county’s finest teachers and a dear friend.

I believe it is Jim Skorvc’s right to put his thoughts in writing in a letter to the editor and that his thoughts as a member of our community are completely separate to what Mr. Beerup thinks goes on in Jim’s classroom. As a former teacher and paraprofessional at the high school, I had the privilege of sitting in on several of Jim’s social studies classes at all grades in the school for semesters at a time. Jim teaches facts, not opinions, and his classroom discussions, which are always lively, are an expression of student interpretation and opinion and not his own. Jim is a consummate educator and provokes students to original thought. He is also a wonderful role model through his sponsorship of the student division of the ACLU at the high school and his involvement in, and service to, his community.

I would love to know if Mr. Beerup has ever spent time in Jim Skorvc’s classroom? Please feel free to contact me about my experience in the classroom of a well-respected, highly experienced educator and talented teacher. I would like to think that, as a community, we are not in the business of persecuting anyone, through their employment, for their beliefs or opinions. Isn’t that what we think we are fighting to stop in Iraq?
