A couple thousand enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders flocked to Arapahoe Basin Ski Area on Friday, Oct. 17, for the first day of the Colorado ski season. Five inches of natural snow the previous weekend contributed to an 18-inch starting base under the Black Mountain Express lift, providing access to the lower-mountain blue and green runs.

This was the third season in a row that A-Basin was the first ski area in the state to open. Several hundred skiers and boarders also waited in line, some arriving as early as 5:30 a.m., to gain membership in the 6th Alley Mug Club, an A-Basin tradition for more than a decade.

There’s a slight chance for rain or snow in the forecast at A-Basin for the coming week, according to, but the site isn’t predicting any accumulation. Visit for updates on terrain status.
