SILVERTHORNE – For the second month in a row, Silverthorne’s sales tax numbers have offered hope that there may be an end to the bleeding.

The town’s December 2009 sales tax revenues (the most recent data available) were down only 3 percent from December 2008. That’s an improvement over most months during 2009, when monthly sales tax revenues were down from 2008 numbers by an average of 13 percent.

The town’s December sales tax revenue totaled $861,000, bringing the 2009 year-end total to just less than $7.5 million – 12 percent less than in 2008.

December was still a tough month for Silverthorne’s building-and-construction retail, which was down 22 percent compared to the same month in 2008.

The Silverthorne Outlets were up 5 percent in December 2009 compared to December 2008, but the real bright spot was the consumer-retail category – including Target and OfficeMax – in which consumers spent a whopping 26 percent more than in the previous year’s holiday season.

The food-and-liquor category, which includes restaurants and bars, was down 8 percent relative to December 2008.

Silverthorne’s December numbers were on-trend with November’s sales tax figures, which were also down only 3 percent from the same month in 2008.
