2016 New Belgium Timberline Cruiser Regatta returns with pirates, mermaids June 25

The funkiest regatta this side of Tour de Fat is coming to Frisco.

On Saturday, the Frisco Bay Marina pairs with New Belgium Brewery — the Fort Collins-based godfathers of major craft beer and the Tour de Fat bike parades — for the 9th annual New Belgium Timberline Cruiser Regatta. This fun race is open to anyone with a sailboat who wants to compete for bragging rights, glory and the best place to soak up the sun in Summit County: the deck of a sailboat on Lake Dillon.

As always, teams will be rewarded for costumes and creativity. Past years have drawn everything from boats of pirates and mermaids to crews wearing nothing but bikinis. Come on, this isn't the America's Cup — it's the Timberline Cruiser Regatta.

"This event is less about sailing and more about great costumes and a great sense of humor. I've even seen mermaids populating an island for this event," stated Jenn Shimp, Marina Guest Services Manager.

Cost of registration is $35 per boat with up to four crewmembers. Any extra crewmembers are $7 apiece. Anyone registering on Friday evening can take advantage of the $6 burger and beer deal at the Island Grill.

What's $35 buy? All Cruiser regatta participants receive a T-shirt, a buffet dinner and New Belgium beer at the after-party.

Which, of course, is another highlight of the regatta. During the after-party at 6:15 p.m., organizers will hand out awards for overall best crew, first, second and third crews, and best costumed crew or boat. There will also be live auction with items like a New Belgium cruiser bike to benefit the Junior Sailing Program.

But wait, there's more: From 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, there will be a captains' meeting where the course map will be supplied. Anyone not on a crew is invited to come to the captains' meeting to be "adopted" onto any registered crews if space is available.

Logistics: The race starts at noon and ends between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. There will be free live music at the Island Grill from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Sad Star Café, and the awards ceremony and auction begin at 6:15 p.m.
