2017 Summit High School spring sports calendar for lacrosse, soccer, baseball and track

It's the start of spring sports season, and for once it even feels like spring in Summit County.

Beginning in early March, the five Summit High sports teams (plus one club rugby team) opened play against non-conference foes across the state and region. Games continue from now through the start of May, and with any luck the season will stretch into mid or late May with post-season tournaments and championships.

Not every sport gets to play in front of home crowds — baseball spends most of season playing league double-headers to make up for Summit’s snowpack — but most do, including the second batch of boy's club rugby players. After a tough (and winless) first season last spring, the crew returns stronger, faster and more in touch with the game, including its first win against Cherry Creek on March 4. Be sure to stop by for at least one game at Breckenridge's Kingdom Park.

Below is a look at home and away schedules for all Tigers teams and rugby, along with possible post-season dates and away matches for the students who don't play at home.

Summit baseball soars to 3-0 start

Hard to believe the baseball season has already started, and even harder to believe local fans won’t catch the Tigers in action at home. But that’s how it goes with baseball in the High Country, where the diamond won’t thaw out until the season is nearly finished in May.

That hasn’t stopped the Tigers from baring their teeth. Since the season opener on March 9, the varsity team has exploded into action with a stellar 3-0 start. In that time they’ve outscored opponents 39-5 thanks to a bomber roster led by Andrew Shaw, Will Heuck, Sam Hull and Turner McDonald. Keep an eye on this team when conference play begins against Rifle on April 1.

Head coach Tom Looby gives details from the latest games:

Summit vs. Alameda, March 9

Summit High baseball won its first of the season with a 19-2 victory over Alameda High School. Andrew Shaw pitched three no-hit innings, while Omar Nunez and Sam Hull combined to allow only two runs in two more innings. At the plate Hull and Shaw each hit home runs. Hull had four hits and Shaw, Nunez and Ethan Drewes had three hits apiece. Brian Hessler and Turner McDonald had two hits apiece.

Summit vs. Skyview, March 11

The Tigers won their second game of the season today, defeating Skyview High School 12-1. Andrew Shaw and Will Heuck combined to pitch a four-hitter. Shaw struck out nine batters and Heuck two batters. At the plate Sam Hull had three hits, and Omar Nunez, Turner McDonald, Andrew Shaw and Jacob Payer had two hits apiece. Nunez, Hull and Shaw each had triples and five players had doubles.

Summit vs. Middle Park, March 14

The Tigers won our third game of the season against Middle Park High School by a score of 8-2. Turner McDonald got the win for Summit by pitching two scoreless innings, while Sam Hull, Will Heuck and Omar Nunez helped secure the victory in relief. At the plate Hull and Blake Olson each went 2-3. Hull added a triple and drove in two runs.
