Starting today, 15 teams from across the world will compete in The America Cup, an international fly fishing tournament held on the streams and rivers surrounding Summit County.

Frisco is the headquarters for the event for the third straight year, all three years the event has been held.

“We enjoy putting on an event that showcases the best of our country and our sport to the rest of the world,’ event director David Pehle said via press release. ” … The feedback that we got from competitors and local people was so amazing; we had to come back to Frisco for an even bigger and better third year.”

The event starts today with five river sessions through Sunday.

Teams compete in five-person squads, fishing sections of the Blue, Arkansas and Colorado rivers. Competitors get points for the fish they land on a scale based on length of the fish.

Australia, Poland, Ireland and Japan will be represented this week, as well as Fly Fishing Team USA, the USA Youth Fly Fishing Team and a slew of other teams from across the States.

Last year, it was a local team that snagged the title, though. Two guides from Frisco’s Blue River Anglers in Frisco – Steven Bowka and Adam Boehlke – were in a deep hole heading into the final day of competition before catching 71 fish in a four-hour span to take home the trophy.
