Labor Day weekend is normally used as a time of rest, a chance to get one last hurrah of grilling and lounging in for the summer.

Running a marathon across a mountain range doesn’t seem quite in the spirit of the leisurely celebrated holiday, yet, Sunday in Breckenridge, runners will tackle the trails on the Tenmile Range in the Breck Crest Mountain Marathon.

It will be the 15th running of the annual race, and the Breck Crest will offer shorter courses of 13.3 miles (for the half-marathon) and a 5-mile trail run in addition to the 23-mile trek that originated the event.

Although a normal marathon is 26.2 miles, event organizer Jeff Westcott has said in the past that the distance for the Breck Crest is more than sufficient.

“In a trail marathon, you don’t need to have the length set at 26.2, because of the difficulty,” Westcott told the Daily in 2009. “There’s a great deal of climbing, you’re above treeline, and it crosses over the Tenmile Range twice. It just doesn’t need to be any longer.”

And for the serious marathon runner, don’t worry, the Breck Crest is considered an official marathon, and times are regarded as such.

Runners take a course that starts out at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge, heads past Beaver Run Resort and kicks up the mountain on the Burro Trail. Competitors then scale the Tenmile Range, hitting a number of trails, before a swift descent from the Peaks Trail down to the finish line at the Riverwalk.

The shorter courses are adapted off the full course with similar starts and finishes.

The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the half-marathoners tagging along. The 5-mile run starts 15 minutes later.

Day-of registration for all three races is available at the Riverwalk start/finish area, beginning at 6:30 a.m. The marathon is $55; the half is $45; and the 5-miler is $35. All races have a $10 day-off registration fee.
