When summer arrives, Breck isn’t just for park rats and powder hounds.
Starting Friday, Breckenridge Ski Resort officially kicks off the summer season with the opening of the Summer Fun Park. It’s an on-mountain intro to the best Breck has to offer during the sun-drenched months between ski seasons — even if winter stubbornly refuses to leave.
Found on the slopes of Peak 8 above downtown and easily accessible via the free BreckConnect Gondola, the Breck Summer Fun Park features activities for all ages. There are the Gold Runner Coaster and Alpine Superslide — two of the mountain’s oldest summer attractions — along with half-day and full-day activities like guided hikes, four-by-four off-road tours and off-road Segway tours. Guests will also find a climbing wall, mini golf and more.
The lingering snowpack has delayed the start of mountain-biking programs and Segway tours, which will begin later in June. Hiking programs and four-by-four off-road tours are also limited.
Starting June 12, the park is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Labor Day. After then it’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday during Oktoberfest weekend. The summer season officially closes on Sept. 13.
But wait, there’s more. The park will open Thursday for a sneak preview from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It’s a sort of locals appreciation day: Simply bring a can of food and get free admission for all ages. Donations go directly to the local nonprofit Family and Intercultural Resource Center.
Unlike winter, when parking spaces are at an all-time premium, guests can park for free in the gondola north parking lot near the BreckConnect Gondola at Breckenridge Station. The gondola starts running for free (yes, free) on June 12 at 9 a.m. Before then, guests can reach the park with the Breck Free Ride.
This summer, the park will debut Kids’ Base Camp with activities built just for young guests. There are three new attractions for children weighing between 30-100 pounds, including a mini zipline, kid’s challenge course and a kid’s summer tubing hill. The base camp isn’t open yet, so keep checking the Summer Fun Park website for exact dates.
Feed the brood
Few things compare to a rumbly tummy on Breck’s alpine slide — and not in a good way.
Stave off hunger pains at Peak 8 starting June 12, when on-mountain eateries like the Ski Hill Grill patio and connected T-Bar open for the summer. Both are open daily from 11 a.m. until the gondola stops spinning.
On Peak 7, Sevens is also open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for lunch and dinner. The restaurant will also serve an all-day brunch on Saturdays and Sundays this summer.
