Dirty Girl Mud Run

What: An annual mud run with 10-12 obstacles on a 3.1-mile course to support Bright Pink, a national nonprofit for ovarian and breast cancer research

When: Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m.

Where: Copper Mountain

Cost: $79 ($135 for Unleash the Fierce weekend)

Registration for the mud run and all Unleash the Fierce weekend events is still open. The $135 option includes entry to the Friday wine night, Saturday mud run, Sunday brunch and Sunday golf scramble. All events include prize giveaways from partners like Never Summer Snowboards, Meier Skis, Volcom, Dynastar and Copper Mountain, including four season ski passes for the winning scramble foursome. To register or find out more, see the Copper Mountain page at http://www.godirtygirl.com.

At 31 years old, all Kimberly Trembearth wants to do is roll in the mud.

“I want to get all types of muddy,” Trembearth said of her plans for this weekend’s Dirty Girl Mud Run at Copper Mountain. “This is the only place where it’s socially acceptable for an adult to go and roll around in mud. Here, you can do it with friends and no one thinks twice about it.”

And then Trembearth started to laugh. The Australian marketing manager for Copper is new to the Dirty Girl, but she’s hardly new to this whole run-in-the-mud thing. She’s finished the Tough Mudder, Muddy Buddy and Warrior Dash before, and so she knows these kinds of events are all about having as much fun as possible, with as many mud fiends as you can find.

Oh, and the best part about the Dirty Girl? It’s only 5 kilometers, with no barbed wire or electricity or frigid ice baths. This one is all about the mud.

“With this race you get to the end and think, ‘Five kilometers is not that far, and then I can get a cocktail at the end?’” Trembearth said. “I’m just really looking forward to meeting other girls. This is a cool opportunity to make new friends, and everyone there has a story. We can share it all while we’re rolling through the mud.”

Trembearth is so ready to romp in the mud that she hasn’t even previewed the 10-12 obstacles on the 3.1-mile course. Past events featured everything from giant slides to fire pits to bridge crossings — all covered in mud and muddy water, naturally — and this year brings more of the same, plus a few new obstacles for veterans like Trembearth.

“I want this to be a surprise,” she said. “I don’t want to know what’s ahead of me before I get there. Like, at the Tough Mudder, who wants to know about the Arctic Enema (ice bath) before they get there? You don’t.”

Weekend for the ladies

Mud pits are just one stop during the Unleash the Fierce weekend, a brand-new event built to benefit Bright Pink, a Chicago-based nonprofit for ovarian and breast cancer research.

The weekend is made by ladies, for ladies, with four major events spread between Friday and Sunday: Wine Night #ForTheGirls at 7 p.m. on Friday ($55 per person), the marquee Dirty Girl Mud Run at 10 a.m. on Saturday ($79) with Dirty Girl’s Night Out specials across town later that night, the Bennies and Bubbly Brunch at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday ($35 per person), and the #ForTheGirls Golf Scramble at Copper Creek Golf Course at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday ($60 per person, $225 per foursome).

Oh, and the best part about Unleash the Fierce? Registration for all four events is just $135 today, tomorrow and right up until wine starts flowing on Friday night — a savings of nearly $100 over registration for individual events. That’s even $80 cheaper than a single entry to the Tough Mudder in Snowmass this weekend.

The low, low price of entry sticks to the mud run mentality. Everyone just wants to have fun, and this weekend makes it affordable to roll in the mud, drink some wine and support a cause close to the heart, all at the same time.

For Trembearth, the mud run is a way to pay tribute to family members who battled with breast and ovarian cancer. Her grandma, Joyce Trembearth, died of ovarian cancer in 2008, and her aunt is currently battling breast cancer. She’s teaming up with another Copper employee, Mary Gray with the events department, to run in the name of everyone who’s faced cancer, whether they’re rolling in the mud that morning or still struggling with treatment and symptoms.

“We’re doing it as a tribute to our family and friends who didn’t win their battles or are still fighting them,” Trembearth said.

Oh, and the best part about being a husband or boyfriend or little brother this weekend? You’re invited to participate in the mud run or golf scramble. It’s built for ladies, sure, but as long as you don’t mind some grime, anyone is welcome.

“Another part of these mud runs is that everyone is a team player,” Trembearth said. “No one is in a bad mood. Everyone is out there just to have fun.”
