Despite having started riding at the age of 7, Dillon’s McCabe Jones really had no accomplishments on top of a horse. Although, it wasn’t really his fault, considering Jones only decided to ride competitively last fall as a freshman at the University of Wyoming.

Now, as his season winds down, Jones has quite a few bullet points to add to his equestrian resume.

Jones will ride at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships this month in Murfreesboro, Tenn., after he successfully made it through regional qualifyings in Lincoln, Neb., and Colorado Springs.

“Coming into the season, I had no expectations, because I have never done anything like this before,” Jones said. ” … For me to advance to nationals is the greatest accomplishment of my riding career. I am very surprised that I made it as a freshman. I was simply hoping to qualify for regionals, but then I just kept moving on.”

Jones began riding more than a dozen years ago at Ptarmigan Ranch in Dillon Valley. His main instructor over the years has been Lynn Bauer.

Now, as one of just two men in the UW equestrian club, Jones will compete in intermediate Western horsemanship at the IHSA’s season-ending show, an event that brings together the top performers from each of the association’s nine regions.

“For nationals, all I hope for is to go to Tennessee and have a good solid ride in my class,” Jones said. “I have already surpassed my expectations for this season, so going to nationals now is just icing on the cake.”

Jones said that he chose UW strictly for academic purposes, but said the equestrian team was just “an added bonus.”

The IHSA, founded in 1967, includes more than 300 member institutions and 6,500 riders across the United States and Canada. For more information, go to the website at http://www.ihsainc.com.
