BRECKENRIDGE — On a crisp Friday night before the storm, Breckenridge broke all the rules and invited a few jib-happy hooligans to play on Main Street for the downtown street competition.
The hand-selected collection of young-and-crazy skiers and snowboarders had free reign on the makeshift terrain park, built and curated by the Keystone A51 park crew. It was intimidating as hell for anyone except the athletes: A 12-foot sheer drop in, a massive spin box with coping and side hits, a few double-barrel rails and plenty of bonk options.
The format was straightforward: Skiers and snowboarders had about 20 minutes each for an open-ended jam session. At the end, the Dew Tour halfpipe and slopestyle judges picked winners based on creativity, style, energy and technical insanity.
After a quick practice session around sundown, the street jam kicked into high gear with a crowd of several hundred spectators. There were competitors, their buddies, kids and parents, curious vacationers, grungy urban fans — you name it and they came to see pros throw down on the pavement.
Canadian native Darcy Sharpe and Denver-based rider Dylan Alito took first and second on the snowboard side, followed by Keystone's Seth Hill in third. He regularly kills it in the A51 park, but this year's street comp was his first invite. It's good to see a little Love for the locals.
For skiers, Sean Jordan of Boulder put on a show to take first overall, while OG pro LJ Strenio took second and Jesper Tjader took third.
