There’s a new brand of hockey in town.

For the first time ever, organizers with the Altitude Field Hockey club will host an adult drop-in game today on the fields at the Silverthorne Recreation Center. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free for participants, with sticks provided for all participants. Play will last about an hour and a half between two or three games.

Club founder Janelle Moore and recently hired head coach Rebecca Grand will be at the fields today, introducing newcomers and veterans alike to the overlooked world of field hockey.

“We’re on the ground floor of being a sports club,” says Moore, a former coach for the Denver Field Hockey Club. “This is all about fun, and I really want to make field hockey an option for parents and kids, just like soccer or football. We have experienced coaches who are just trying to bring the sport to Summit County.”

She has played field hockey at all levels for more than a decade, taking her club team to the Disney Junior Classic in Orlando and other tournaments across Colorado. She wants any and all interested adults to swing by for the first drop-in game, even if players have little or no experience.

“It’s just going to be a fun, relaxed environment,” Moore says of the early drop-in games. “This is for anyone who wants to just have fun and be outside. Come out and see what the fuss is about.”

As the summer picks up, she wants to host free games in Silverthorne on Monday and Thursday evenings. Eventually she’ll add games at the Breckenridge fields, pending approval from the town.

Beyond introductory games, Moore and Grand will launch three youth leagues (U12, U14 and U 17), but first come clinics and workshops to go over the basics with local kids. She’s in the process of scheduling free clinics for players 7 years old and older. Until the dates are set, interested parents can contact her through the club website or check the club Facebook page for more information.
