Summit High School skier Zach Fretz competes in the state high school alpine skiing championship race at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, CO on Thursday, February 21, 2008.

STEAMBOAT ” Zach Fretz and Briana Perkins both won individual state skiing championships Thursday in Steamboat to help give Summit High School’s boys and girls teams the lead after the first day of competition.

“It feels good,” Fretz said by phone after his slalom victory. “But I’m not celebrating anything yet.”

The senior leader wasn’t overly jovial Thursday night because he was focusing on today’s giant slalom, which begins at 9 a.m.

Tigers alpine coach Tory Hauser described Fretz’s performance as “brilliant.”

“He did what he’s been doing all year,” Hauser said. “He pointed (his skis) down hill and skied within himself. He was first place in both runs ” that’s a champion.”

Perkins, who won the skate Nordic race by seven seconds over rival Karlie Moore of Vail, led the whole way.

The race featured a 30-second interval start, so Tigers coach Gene Dayton needed to use a Palm Pilot program called Lickity Split to track Perkins’ position.

“Briana was in the lead and we wanted her to know it,” Dayton said. “We also told her it wasn’t much of a lead, so she had to hang in there.”

It was the third individual state title of the senior standout’s career.

Perkins was followed by teammates Julia Hayes in 11th and Mackenzie Jones in 12th.

On the boys Nordic side, Tyler Reinking took third, Richard Hayes 10th and Alan Harrington 12th.

Fretz was joined by alpine scorers Kevin Coleman (sixth) and Drew Beling (11th or 12th, Hauser said).

Erin Breslin led the Lady Tigers on the slopes with an impressive third-place finish.

“Erin skied the best run I’ve ever seen her ski,” Hauser said. “It just came down to GGRRRR ” the will to win.”

Breslin was followed by Meigan Canfield in 10th and Chelsey Fretz (Zach’s sister) in 11th.

The boys and girls team championships will be determined by today’s giant slalom and classic races.
