Go Play: Fruita to host Rumble at 18 Road bike and foot-race event May 2-3
WHAT: Rumble at 18 Road
WHERE: 18 Road trails in Fruita
WHEN: Saturday & Sunday, May 2-3
Rumble at 18 Road may have been delayed two weekends due to wind and rain, but plenty of participants are still expected. The annual trail-running and mountain-bike race is now planned for Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. It is based throughout Fruita’s well-known 18 Road trails.
“We’re praying for great weather,” said John Klish, owner/operator of Mountain and Desert (MAD) Racing.
According to Klish, more than 200 people are already registered for the weekend of races; and he hopes to host twice that amount by the time racing rolls around. The structure of the delayed event is the same.
“The Grand Valley is a trails mecca, and the bike trails are the lifeblood of Fruita,” said Elisa Jones, an event coordinator. “John Klish did a good thing by choosing to protect those resources (by delaying the races).”
Available races include trail running on Saturday (3.5 miles, 7 miles and 11 miles); short-track mountain biking on Saturday (20 minutes per race); and cross-country mountain biking on Sunday (a variety of distances). Medals are given to the top three competitors in each race category except for the Pro XCO and Pro STXC categories, which receive winners purses. Junior development competition is also part of the fun.
“We hope everyone with a bike or running shoes comes out to ride, race, volunteer, or support the event,” Jones added.
