High Gear: Peregrine Radama 2 tent made for budget backpacking

The Peregrine Radama 2 is a great deal for a two-person tent. At 5 lbs., 7 oz., it is light enough to take backpacking but spacious enough to have a "gear loft Theater," with two wide-opening doors for both parties and four separate inside pockets for storage.

The tent comes with a full-coverage polyester rainfly that offers strength and stability for those higher winds, while also being well ventilated. Sold separately for ultra-light travel is the footprint: pack the ground tarp and rain fly, leaving the mesh interior at home to lose nearly half of the original weight for long backpacking trips. While I haven't yet camped with just the rainfly and ground tarp, friends report staying "plenty dry."

Field test

Although tents in the ultra-light category can be as little as 3 pounds, the Peregrine Radama 2 tent (interior included) served as the perfect shelter for our two-day backpacking trip from Frisco to Vail, and it was worth the extra weight. Having a door on each side of the tent was greatly appreciated when getting outside for late-night bathroom trips. It meant I didn't have to wake up my partner.

We slept with the rain fly on all night and didn't have any problems with the tent becoming stuffy or humid. On top of that, the extra space allowed both of us to sit up fully without having to crouch. At 90.5×59 inches, there is plenty of room for two people, and the extra storage is welcome. Although we just used the gear loft to store our headlamps and books, it could also be used as an iPad theater for family camping.

Without reading the instructions, we found the tent easy to set up. The ball-and-socket joints allow easy access for the tent poles, and each joint had two bar attachments for the ground tarp and rain fly. These were easy to snap together. The only drawback I can see with this tent is replacing the unique plastic joint pieces if they break.

Retail price for the Peregrine Radama 2 is $165, which seems like a smoking deal when compared to other ultra-light tents in the $400 range. With the amount of money you save and the option to go from medium to ultra-lightweight, this tent seems like the obvious choice for a quality two-person tent on a budget.
