Hockey scores its first win of the season

Summit’s Jack Nevicosi put the team on his shoulders with a hat trick Saturday thanks to help from Sean Farley on all three as well as Simo Korpela on two and Peter Grotemeyer on the other.
In the day’s 6-3 win over Kent Denver at home, the Sun Devils were shorthanded, with three players suspended and just 10 skaters showing up for play.
Summit was tired from a tough 3-2 loss Friday in overtime at home against Mullen, but Karl Olsson-deem, Travis Potts and Grotemeyer still tallied goals for the Tigers. Summit scored four times in the second period and added one for insurance in the third.
“They’re starting to figure it out as a whole,” Dore said. “Farley was under the weather with an injury. He toughed it out and played well.”
After two weekend games, Summit Hockey sits at 1-2 on the conference and 1-6 on the season.
As far as Friday’s loss, it wasn’t an easy one to take.
“You never like to lose, but we battled pretty hard. … You can’t play hard some of the time, you’ve got to play hard all of the time,” head coach Chris Ruhly said following Friday’s loss.
Assistant coach Bobby Dore said the third period and overtime could have gone either way.
“We’re young and it’s a teaching year. The kids played the system to a ‘T.’ It could have gone either way. We hit three posts that didn’t go in in the third period. … It was a battle of the 0-4 teams and they came out ahead,” Dore said.
The players are still making minor errors in games that are costing the team points, but Dore said he saw progress made on Saturday even over Friday’s loss.
Summit not only bumped up from its typical 20 shots on goal, but also outshot Kent Denver, 29-27.
Dore added that freshman George Kamins has been a standout as he adapts to his role on the team.
On Saturday, the team plays an in-conference game on the road against Columbine.
“We’re hoping to go into Christmas break 2-2 in the conference,” Dore said. He expects the initiative leaders Blake Horan, Grotemeyer and Farley showed to watch game tape during a practice cancelled due to weather Tuesday may be having its effect.
