Kendrick leads Phillies to 7-4 win over Rockies

PHILADELPHIA – Kyle Kendrick was thankful for two things Tuesday night: an early lead and, maybe more importantly, that he didn’t have to face his own lineup.Kendrick pitched effectively in a career-best 7 1-3 innings, and Greg Dobbs and Pedro Feliz both drove in two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 7-4.The Phillies have 42 runs and 46 hits in their last three games, all wins.”It’s nice that I’m on this side,” Kendrick said.Kendrick (4-2), using a sinking fastball to induce ground balls, allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out five and walking one. He previously had gone seven innings seven times in his career.”(Kendrick) had pretty good command, worked both sides of the plate and took us to a good place in the game,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.Ubaldo Jimenez (1-5) continued to struggle, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in four innings as the Rockies fell to 1-10 in his 11 starts.”He had pretty good stuff tonight but at the end of the day it is what it is,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Jimenez. “They have a good offensive club.”The Phillies, who had 19 hits in Monday’s 20-5 win over Colorado, scored all their runs in the first two innings Tuesday when they sent 16 batters to the plate.”It’s nice,” Kendrick said of the early lead. “You can’t relax and you have to take it as if it’s 0-0, but it’s nice to have that kind of lead. The guys are swinging well right now.””When we get out like that, it definitely gives the pitcher some breathing room and he should relax and pitch his game,” Manuel said. “And that’s exactly what (Kendrick) kind of did.”Dobbs, replacing left fielder Pat Burrell who was a late scratch with a stiff neck, hit a two-run single to right and Feliz added a two-run double to left that gave Philadelphia a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Geoff Jenkins knocked in runs in the second. Jimmy Rollins singled to center and scored on Utley’s double to right. Utley scored on Howard’s single and Jenkins followed with a double.Philadelphia managed just two hits the rest of the way.”We put it on hold or something,” Manuel said of the offense.Ryan Spilborghs hit a two-run homer to left, his second in two nights, off reliever Tom Gordon in the eighth for Colorado. Ian Stewart followed with a double and Yorvit Torrealba singled to put runners on first and third. Rollins prevented further damage for the Phillies, ending the inning by robbing Omar Quintanilla of a hit by ranging far to his left and flipping to Utley at second for a force, his second highlight reel defensive play of the game.Rollins had praise for Kendrick after the Phillies improved to 7-1 in the right-hander’s last eight starts.”He’s keeping us in the game and starting to rediscover his confidence,” said Rollins, after stating that Kendrick was more aggressive in his rookie season last year. “If you look out there, I’m on him all the time to quit nibbling and quit begging for guys to swing at pitches; they’re not going to do that.”The Rockies added a run in the ninth on Todd Helton’s two-out RBI single off Brad Lidge. Seth Smith had three hits for Colorado. The game was delayed by rain for 1 hour, 27 minutes in the bottom of the eighth.Notes: Stewart became the sixth player to start at second base for the Rockies this season. … Rockies 3B Garrett Atkins returned to the lineup Tuesday night after missing the last three games with a stiff neck and back spasms. He went 1-for-5. … Rollins stole his eighth base of the season in the second inning, giving him 22 consecutive steals without being caught dating to last season. … The Phillies’ 42 runs in three games fell two shy of the club’s modern-day record, set in 1900. The club scored 60 runs in three games in 1894.
