Later this month, the Keystone Adaptive Center, in conjunction with Adaptive Adventures, will host an adaptive ski and ride camp as part of the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center’s Heroic Military Program.

The BOEC Heroic Military Program is designed for men and women who have served in the United States military and are now faced with the challenges of living with a disability suffered during service. The Military All-Mountain Adaptive Ski and Ride Camp, scheduled for Jan. 15-17, will provide lessons for beginner to advanced skiers and riders in a variety of adaptive disciplines, including two-track, four-track, ski bike, snowboard, monoski and bi-ski. The lessons will be put on by staff and volunteers from Adaptive Adventures, the Keystone Adaptive Center and the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center.

Though ski lessons are a big component of the week, this program also provides an opportunity for veterans to connect with one another and to share similar experiences. Many of the program’s offerings also welcome family members to participate, as the creators of the Heroic Military Program feel family are also deeply affected by military tragedies and are a critical part of the healing process.

Meals, lodging, rentals and lesson fees are provided for each participant through private donations and commercial sponsorships, including with Vail Resorts. If you are interested in donating, donations can be sent to the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center at P.O. Box 697, Breckenridge, CO 80424. Event organizers say to be sure to include a notation for “KAC Military Camp.”

This month’s adaptive ski and ride camp is just one of the BOEC’s variety of programs as a part of the Heroic Military Program. For more information on the program or to submit an application to participate, you can visit the BOEC’s website at BOEC.org/programs and click on the Heroic Military Program page. You can also call 970-453-6422 or 1-800-383-2632.

The Keystone Adaptive Center said it conducted 700 lessons during the 2017-18 winter season.
