COLORADO STATE CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS — SUMMIT CROSS-COUNTRY

On Oct. 31, two Summit Tigers traveled to Colorado Springs for a shot at individual glory in the Colorado State Cross-Country Championships. Summit all-stars Ruthie Boyd and McKenna Ramsay made the trip solo after the girl’s team barely missed the cut at 4A Western Slope regionals on Oct. 24. Although Boyd didn’t crack the top-10 like she wanted, head coach Heather Quarantillo was pleased with her top runners.

‘They both ran very well-executed races,” she said. “Ruthie was closing in on her top-10 goal near the finish, but they were both pretty maxed out. They ran as hard as they could and really gave it everything.”

The race was held on a slightly modified course at Norris Penrose Event Center. It’s the same host site where Boyd and Ramsay have competed every season since freshman year. The 2015 course was flatter and faster than in years past — a slight disadvantage for mountain runners — but Quarantillo said it was “a true cross-country course,” with a creek crossing, a mid-race climb and a flat loop.

“There’s just so much that goes into the state meet — extra planning and strategy and jitters,” she said. “There were some runners that put down incredibly fast times at the state meet, and I think that just makes for better competition.”
