Sawyer qualifies for two event finals at state

FORT COLLINS ” All five of the athletes who represented Summit High at Friday’s 4A state meet in Fort Collins swam well by placing higher than the seeds they were assigned.
It was a successful day for the Tigers, especially Tom Sawyer, who advanced to today’s event finals in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 medley relay.
Sawyer took seventh in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 6.65 seconds and eighth in the 100 fly (56.33 seconds). The junior moved up in both events, as he entered the postseason seeded 11th and ninth, respectively.
Sawyer was also a member of SHS’ 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams. The freestyle team, which included Shane Meister, Raphael Joly and Justin Skall took 21st (as a 25 seed) with a time of 3:42.69. The medley relay team (Joly in backstroke, Skall in breaststroke, Sawyer in fly and Zach Michieli in free) took 19th in 1:53.35.
Joly also competed individually, taking 21st in the 100 back (1:01.44) and 23rd in the 200 IM (2:14.82).
Sawyer, who competes today at 3:30 p.m., will have, among others, first-year head coach Eric Godsman cheering him on as he competes against the best of Colorado 4A’s best.
“I’m excited to see how he does when it’s punch time,” Godsman said. “I guess he usually does awesome when he’s under pressure like that. … That’s what I heard from his teammates.”
