LAKEWOOD – “This is the most kids we’ve had qualified (for state competition) in a long time,” said Tigers Track and Field Coach Kristy McClain of Katie Sodergren, Julie Bishop, Chris Rice, Nick Adolph, Zach Armstrong and Brian Joyce. Athletes qualified at Jeffco Stadium’s prelim regionals meet Thursday, with more qualification opportunities happening today at Jeffco’s regional finals, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Senior Katie Sodergren annihilated her competitors in the triple jump with 33 ft., 9.75 inch leap, McClain said. Sodergren, who both won the event and broke the school record again, will compete in the open 800 meter run today. Her goal is to beat the state record.Julie Bishop placed third in the girls’ 1600 run (5:41.39).”We talked about running a smart race … to go out with the leaders … see where the pace goes,” McClain said. “Conifer passed her in the last lap, but in the last 200 Julie took off and passed quickly. …It’s impressive to see a freshman do so well.”

The boys’ 4×800 relay (Rice, Adolph, Armstrong and Joyce) also finished third (8:44.60).According to McClain, winning a state spot was never a sure thing for this relay team. “It was pins and needles for the duration of the race,” she added. “Four teams were relatively close (in the qualifier). But, they’d been working all season.”

The following athletes will be competing in today’s finals: Rice, Jenya Berino and Tess Olson in the two mile run; Will Bartells in the 200; Stephen Ike in the 110 and 300 hurdles; Armstrong in the 300 hurdles; and Katie Sodergren in the 800.
