It was snowing on and off throughout the day at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area on Friday, bringing winter back to keep the ski season going in Summit County. Avalanche rescue dog Max took this opportunity to work on his search-and-rescue skills. Max is a 6-month-old black Labrador retriever owned and handled by A-Basin patroller Dominic Vellone. Despite his young age, Max is already showing a high skill level in obedience, as well as search skills and scent tracking.

Avalanche search-and-rescue dogs begin their training by playing games like hide and seek, fetch, and tug. By turning drills into games, handlers engage the dogs and get them excited to learn the skills that will eventually translate to search and rescue situations.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area will remain open until the scheduled closing day of Sunday, June 7.
