Summit County student-athlete of the week: Ethan Swadburg
Ethan Swadburg, a senior at Summit High School, is finishing up his fifth year with Hocks Free Ride team. Swadburg grew up skiing and decided to continue with the sport throughout his high school career. His favorite trick is a Cork 360 move, although he’s always looking to challenge himself with something new.
Why did you decide to join the Free Ride team?
“You get a lot more freedom, you can do whatever you want. You don’t have to always be trying to beat somebody’s time, trying to go the fastest. It’s a pretty good way to express yourself, feel different than other people. It’s just enjoyable. Every day is different. It’s fun.”
What do you like best about Free Ride?
“The freedom to do whatever you want. There’s no pressure to do something. It’s all up to you. … Skiing’s just the best.”
What tricks are you working on now?
“I’m currently trying to learn double flips. It’s been pretty challenging. I’ve been doing a lot of training at Woodward to really make sure I’ve got it down before I bring it to snow.”
What do you do when there’s no snow to ski on?
“I go to Woodward, jump on trampolines. I work a lot, save up my money to travel (to competitions). I go cliff jumping every once in a while. … Most of my time’s taken up by skiing or hanging out with friends.”
Are you able to balance sports and schoolwork?
“It’s not too difficult. I only have six classes at school so I can go skiing every day around 12, then I usually just come home and do some homework.”
What are your future plans?
“I don’t know. I’m going to see how this year goes and then, I don’t know, see what happens. I’ll probably take second semester of my freshman year of college off, just come back and ski. I just want to keep skiing. … I’m definitely staying in Colorado.”
What goals are you aiming for this season?
“I want to try to do as well as I can on all the contests I get into. Hopefully I can qualify for more prestigious events next year. I’ll be competing in the Aspen Open (in February), which is a contest in the X-Games, which is one of the biggest open contests in America. I got fifth place last year. Hopefully I can get on the podium this year.”
Do you have a favorite professional you like to follow?
“There’s too many to have just one favorite. … I guess I look up to all the pro skiers that are at Breckenridge all the time. It’s cool to see them ski in real life, like Adam Delorme or Pat Goodnough, I really enjoy watching them ski.”
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
“Radical, extreme, and … relaxed would be a good way to describe (me).”
What’s on your playlist?
“I don’t really like listening to music, gets me too serious. But if I were to listen to music while I was skiing, it would probably be something like Led Zeppelin.”
Wild Card Question: If you could choose any superpower, what would it be?
“Definitely would want to be able to teleport wherever I want so I don’t have to ride chairlifts ever again.”
