No-hitters can be an exceptional thing to witness. But, when on the wrong end of one, it’s not exactly the same.

The Summit High baseball team had the unfortunate chance to watch a D’Evelyn pitcher throw a no-hitter on Friday ” against the Tigers.

“The score started to get away from us, and we just couldn’t hit,” SHS head coach Barre Lee said afterward. ” … The one thing our kids did was continue to compete and … I’m proud of that.”

The Tigers were missing seven starters due to the school’s spring break that started today, and the team failed to generate any offense in a 16-0 loss.

Instead of worrying about the lopsided score, Lee said that the game gave a good chance for his younger players to get some valuable experience.

Playing only one senior and one junior in the game, the Tigers played some pretty solid defense, Lee said.

Michael Leopold made “three or four really nice catches” in the outfield, Lee noted, and Jacob Hartley “made a catch that no one could believe” when he snagged a rope line drive.

“We work really hard at (outfield defense),” Lee said. “For our JV guys, the only opportunity to get into the game at varsity at all is to play in the outfield. So, the guys were ready for that chance.”

Another player that Lee credited with having a good game was infielder Evan Streit.

The Tigers now officially break for a week before getting back into action on April 21.

With three games left on the schedule, Lee said that he’s going to have more of a focus of working in some younger players.

“I’m going to start mixing in these younger kids because they really compete,” the coach said. “This is going to be who we have next year.”

Summit (3-9) plays Englewood when the team returns from spring break. The game is slated to start at 4 p.m. on the 21st.
