Summit High: Boys’ lax takes down Grand Junction
summit daily news
Summit County, Colorado
The first time the Summit High boys’ lacrosse team played Grand Junction early in the season, the Tigers struggled in what was their second game of a doubleheader. They ran out of gas and finished with a 9-8 loss.
When the two teams faced off again on Friday in Evergreen, it was a whole different story.
The Tigers dominated from the opening face off and cruised to an 11-5 win.
“Our defense played a really good game today,” SHS head coach Michael O’Neill said after the team’s seventh straight win. “(Grand Junction) scored a couple of goals in the last minute, and they had a couple goals off dead ball whistles. So really, our defense didn’t give up much the whole game.”
Sonny Magrino, Tony Feldman, A.J. Pestello and both Bryan and Kyle Metzger helped to anchor the Summit defense in the win, while goaltender Jeff Goldstein stopped nearly everything that was thrown at him.
“They really don’t get enough credit for the job they’ve done for us this season,” O’Neill added.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead at halftime and built the lead up to 11-3 with less than a minute to play. Along the way, Summit doubled Grand Junction in shot attempts and controlled the ball on offense.
Shamus O’Neill had an outstanding game for the Tigers at the offensive end. The junior led the team in scoring with seven points off five goals and two assists.
Sam Dudick netted three goals of his own, while Dylan Horan, Jon Gutierrez and Brandon Major all scored for Summit.
The win puts the Tigers at an impressive 10-3 on the season, and leaves the team with a chance to still make the playoffs.
Summit plays again today at 11 a.m., when it takes on Durango at Evergreen High School.
