Summit High head girls’ soccer coach Tommy Gogolen said that he could see obvious improvements in his team’s play Thursday night, but, unfortunately, the result was pretty similar to the rest of the season.

The Tigers fell 7-0 in a road game at Centaurus.

“We definitely improved from last game,” Gogolen said. ” … We played hard. They were a

good team.”

SHS netminder Hailey Curnutte had yet another solid game between the pipes. Curnutte stopped an astounding 12 shots on goal, helping to keep the score respectable.

Summit ” which doesn’t have access to an outdoor practice field and has to play every game on the road ” was shorthanded due to injuries as the Tigers faced off with their Jeffco League rival.

Centaurus jumped out to a five-goal lead at halftime, with Summit failing to generated any sustainable offense. But, the Tigers settled down after the break and held the host school to only two goals in the remaining minutes.

Then, after the break, the Tigers had their best scoring opportunity of the game in the 72nd minute. Kayla Gray broke through the Centaurus defense and rifled a shot that just missed the net.

“It was Kayla’s first time playing at forward,” Gogolen said. “She has some really good touches, and, hopefully, those will translate into goals in the future.”

Gogolen also credited junior fullback Katie Pusey and junior defender Hannah Marion for having solid performances.

“I’m really happy with how much she has improved over the year,” the coach said of Marion. “She’s definitely a big proponent of our team.”

The Tigers now have a week break before their next game. The time off will give Summit an opportunity to iron out some kinks in its game.

“We’re going to really work on our positioning and keep trying to be more aggressive,” Gogolen said.

The Tigers travel to Englewood High School on April 9 for another league match. The game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
