While Summit High School fielded a pair of top finishers, it was Battle Mountain's day on the podium at Friday's CHSAA slalom race at Copper Mountain Resort.

The Tiger boys and girls teams each finished third at the event, behind Battle Mountain and Evergreen high schools. The Summit girls were without state contender Ellie Brown-Wolf for the race. She was away at a competition at Red River. Rachel Smith, McKenzie Hart and Gisele Thompson also opted out of their second runs in order to practice for Junior Olympic giant slalom qualifiers later this week.

In the boys' race, Battle Mountain's Sands Simonton, Quintin Cook and Keenan Zopf contributed to a Husky podium sweep. Simonton took the top spot with a two-run time of 1 minute, 33.04 seconds, followed by Cook (1:36.31) and Zopf (1:36.98).

Cameron Berget was the top Tiger boys finisher in fifth place, running the course in 1:38.14.

The Husky's Haley Frischholz finished first in the girls' race with a time of 1:32.42, followed by Evergreen's Brenna Hattler in 1:32.55. The Tigers' Dani Moulton was third in 1:35.31, edging Battle Moutain's Abby Davidson (1:36.12).

Summit's Jack Farrell, Slav Uglyar, Jill Bauer, McKenna Ramsay and Jeneva Ascher each finished in the top 16.

STATE BOUND

With two races to go, Summit High School's Alpine ski team looks like it will once again be sending a number of skiers to the state championship. This year's competition will be on the Tigers' home turf at Keystone Resort, Feb. 19-20.

The team already has 18 skiers either qualified or simply needing another race result to make it.

"We're in pretty good shape," head coach Karl Barth said after Friday's race. "We've got one or two that we're trying to sneak in there and see if we can get them in."

The Tigers will close the season with a GS race at Aspen on Friday, Feb. 6, and a slalom competition at Ski Cooper, Feb. 12.
