If you happen to see a snowshoeing Elvis running near Summit High School on Saturday, don’t panic ” it’s perfectly normal.

Well, at least it’s normal for the “Love Me Tender” Snowshoe Adventure 5K hosted by the SHS track and field team.

The inaugural Valentine’s Day event ” which is an Elvis-themed snowshoe race with a prize going to the top impersonator ” will begin at 10 a.m. at Summit High. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the SHS commons area, and entry fees are $20 for students and $25 for adults. There is an additional $5 fee for day-of registration. All proceeds are donated to the SHS track and field team.

Contestants can pre-register by stopping by the SHS main office or

by sending an e-mail to

summitrunner3521@yahoo.com. As all racers receive a free T-shirt, please include shirt size as well as age and address when registering.

The race consists of a 5K course cutting through the fields around Farmer’s Korner, according to SHS assistant track coach Darren Brungardt. Though relatively flat throughout the race, runners and walkers will get a steep climb at Heartbreak Hill, followed by two heart-shaped loops.

There will be post-race activities in the SHS commons with snacks, door prizes and awards.

“Young or old, in love or heartbroken, elite racers or novices, this race will be a rockin’ good time,” Brungardt said in an e-mail.

Brungardt also wanted to thank Blue River Sports, Pearl Izumi, High Country Health Care, KSMT, SHS PTSO, private donations, and our volunteers for helping to put on the race.

Plenty of parking for the race is available in the student parking lot (south lot) at SHS.

The SHS track and field team begins its season with a meet at Elizabeth High School on Saturday, March 7.
