Summit High Sports Wrap-Up: Tiger spring sports in full swing
Summit High School spring sports kicked into full swing this week with a number of teams hosting their home openers under sunny skies.
Track and field: The Summit boys and girls track teams traveled to Rifle Friday to open their season. The Summit boys team finished seventh of 19 teams at the event. The girls finished 11th of 18 teams.
Nate Martin led the way for the boys with a first-place finish in the 400 meter dash, rounding the track in 52.56 seconds. Martin, Alex Veleta, Vicente Ramos and Ben Jorgenson combined for a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay. Zach Johnson contributed a second-place finish in the high jump clearing 5 feet 10 inches.
McKenna Ramsay finished first for the girls in the 400 in 1:00.2. Ramsay Jessica Horii, Megan McDonnell and Sarah Lorch combined for a fourth-place finish in the 800 relay.
The team will travel to Fort Collins Saturday, March 21 for the annual Runners Roost Invite.
Boys lacrosse: The Tiger boys lacrosse team opened their season at home last Tuesday with a 7-5 win over Eagle Valley. They fell to Conifer on the road Thursday 11-4 and lost a close at-home to Grand Junction 8-7. They’ll host Green Mountain Monday, March 16.
Girls lacrosse: The Summit girls went 1-1 in their first full week of play with a 13-2 win at Conifer Thursday, March 12 and a 15-2 loss at Fruita Monument Saturday. The team opened the season with a 13-3 loss to Green Mountain, March 7. They’ll travel to Golden Tuesday for their next game.
Girls soccer: The girls soccer team moved to 0-4-1 on the season this week. The Tigers fell to Steamboat Springs on the road in overtime 3-2 Tuesday and 7-0 against league power Battle Mountain Thursday. The girls tied Delta 1-1 in double overtime Saturday. The team will host Battle Mountain in an early season rematch Tuesday, March 17.
Baseball: Summit baseball opened the season with back-to-back losses in a double-header against Palisade Saturday. The Tigers lost the first game 4-1 and the second 11-3. They will play at Jefferson Tuesday, March 17 and will travel to Coal Ridge Tuesday and face Rifle Saturday, March 21.
