With having a relatively inexperienced team entering the season, Summit High head tennis coach Dave Turrin knew that it might take his young squad some time to get used to playing in key situations.

After Tuesday’s nail-biting finish in a match at St. Mary’s Academy, the Tigers appear to have it down.

Senior Kali Turrin won the deciding match at the No. 1 singles spot to lift her team to a 4-3 win over the host team.

“This was a really good win for us,” Dave Turrin said. “We handled it well as far as kids winning big points at big times in their matches.”

No points were bigger than that of Kali Turrin’s. The Tiger captain fell behind after losing the first set 6-4, but Turrin fought back and won the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

“Both teams had won three points at the time of that match, so we needed the win to clinch the match,” Dave Turrin said. “It was a really good win for us.”

Ali Hartley also earned a point for the Tigers in singles, winning in the No. 3 slot 6-2, 6-4.

Summit also won two doubles matches on the day. The No. 2 team of Molly Allen and Laura George won 6-2 and 7-5, and Melissa Gordon and Ania Zawadzki won at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-2.

The Tigers nearly took the match in dominant fashion, but the No. 4 doubles team of Amy Modglin and Julie Arbuckle just barely lost in a match that had three set tie breakers.

Sophia Bolt also just missed out on a win in the No. 2 singles match. The sophomore won the first set 6-4, before dropping the final two.

“She has had to play some very tough matches this year,” Turrin said. “Even though she lost, she had a good match.”

The Tigers (4-3) travel to Machebeuf, Friday, for a match at 4 p.m.
