Summit High: Tigers boys’ lax takes down Battle Mountain

Led by six-point performances from both Sam Dudick and Shamus O’Neill, the Summit High boys’ lacrosse team cruised to a 14-4 win at Battle Mountain, Tuesday.
“They were a little understaffed with having to start six freshman,” SHS head coach Michael O’Neill said of the Tigers’ opponent, “but we played pretty well.”
Dudick scored three goals and added three assists in the game, while Shamus O’Neill tallied five helpers along with a goal.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first period, then increased the lead to 11-3 at the half. O’Neill said the Tigers were able to use the second half to “clear the benches” and give some younger players some playing experience.
Dylan Huran scored three goals for Summit, while Dyaln Junkermeier scored twice.
Andrew Dunlap, Michael Daniels and Rick Dreyer each added a goal as well for Summit.
The win will give the Tigers some momentum heading into a rare doubleheader at Glenwood on Thursday. Summit’s first matchup with Glenwood was postponed due to weather, earlier this season, and the only available make-up date was when the two teams were scheduled to play again.
“It’s really hard,” O’Neill said of playing two lacrosse games in the same day. “It’s pretty much the same as high school football. This isn’t tennis or golf or basketball or, even hockey. It’s really physical.”
Despite the tough day ahead, O’Neill said his team has to take it in stride.
“Hopefully, we can go in and get two wins,” the coach said. “Then we have a week off for spring break.
” … We’re starting to get a lot better the more and more we’ve gotten to get outside and play. Hopefully, we can keep it going.”
The Tigers (6-3) play at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday.
