Summit local Ellie Hartman leads Barry U. to Div. II NCAA rowing title

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — There ain't nothing like a two-peat.

On May 29, the women's eight-person rowing team with Barry University of Miami won its second straight Division II National Championship. The No. 1-ranked team, led by Summit County local and second-year team captain Ellie Hartman, swept the competition on the 2,000-meter course at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in California. It marks the BU Buccaneers 16th national championship.

"This second time was awesome because we were coming off the first championship, and it was exciting to see the team pull together for a second," the 21-year-old Hartman said. "In the fall, we didn't do as well as we wanted to, so it was cool to see that mental push and see all the girls come together in the spring."

The Buccaneers won the eight-person final by defeating Central Oklahoma, Western Washington and Humboldt State with a time of 6:44.184. BU's opponents finished with respective times of 6:47.115, 6:49.267 and 6:57.036. Barry trailed Central Oklahoma by just over two-tenths of a second at the 500-meter mark. At the 1,000-meter halfway point, Hartman pushed her team to a lead of 1.39 seconds. Barry bumped its lead to 1.43 seconds with 500 meters remaining and then pulled away for a victory of nearly three seconds.

For Hartman, now an athletic junior, the team's second national championship is more than yet another trophy for the display case. The lifelong ski racer won back-to-back titles as one of the freshest captains in collegiate rowing: After breaking her leg on the mountain as a high school senior, she needed something — anything — to stay active in college and walked onto the BU rowing team as a freshman.

Two years and two national titles later, she can't imagine life away from the water.

"After my first year, when I was just trying to make the team, I wanted to create a position where the girls trusted me as an athlete, as a rower," said Hartman, who recently graduated with a bachelor's in business administration and will stay in Miami for MBA coursework during her senior seasons of rowing. "I wanted to strive for that leadership role. We had a lot of pressure this year to take another championship, but, overall, this team is so unified that being a leader just became something that was awesome. These girls are amazing."

BU also took first-place in the four-person division at the National Championship. In the final, Barry won with a time of 7:36.208, defeating Central Oklahoma and Western Washington, who finished in 7:41.915 and 7:45.745, respectively.
