Summit local Sierra Anderson posts fastest female time at Fall Classic MTB race

Summit County local Sierra Anderson completed the 2018 Fall Classic mountain bike race on Sunday in two hours, 57 minutes and 11 seconds, the fastest of any female competitor.

Maverick Sports' summer series of mountain bike events concluded on Sunday with the annual Fall Classic 30-mile, 21-mile and 12-mile mountain bike races.

More than 145 mountain bikers competed across 20 different divisions and Summit County local Sierra Anderson won the overall women's 30-mile race.

Riding for Breck Bike Guides, Anderson completed the course in two hours, 57 minutes and 11 seconds. The time was just under eight minutes faster than Jennifer Spinelli, who rode in the Expert + Singlespeed Women division and finished in 03:05:06.

In the men's 30-mile race, Prestige Imports Cycling Team coach Adam Zimmerman was the fastest of the 58 male riders who took to the long course, completing it in 02:23:32. That time was five-and-a-half minutes faster than the second-place finisher in Zimmerman's Pro-Open Men's division, Ciro Zarate (02:29:13).

Racing in the Singlespeed Men's division and riding for Gates Carbon Drive, Mitch Westall posted the second-fastest time of the day on the 30-mile long course, crossing the finish line at Breckenridge's Carter Park in 02:26:48. That time was more than six minutes faster than the second-fastest rider in the Singlespeed Men's division, Cole Sports' Will McDonald (02:33:37).

The winner of the Expert Men 19-39 division, Jarad Christianson, crossed the 30-mile race finish line at Carter Park with a time 28 seconds slower than Westall, at 02:27:16. Riding for Screaming Eagles, Christianson's time was more than five minutes faster than the second-place finisher in the Expert Men 19-39 division, Brian Helt of Breck Bike Guides (02:32:42).

The two other divisions to tackle the 30-mile course on Sunday included the Expert Men 40-49 and Expert Men 50+. Stephen White (02:32:24) posted one of the most impressive performances on Sunday, winning this Expert Men 50+ division more than five minutes faster than the winner of the Expert Men 40-49 division, Avalanche Sports' Mickey Florio (02:37:48).

White wasn't the only Expert Men 50+ divisional competitor to best all of the times in the younger Expert Men 40-49 division, however. He was joined by First City Cycling's Team's Dwight Hall (02:33:37) and Wilderness Sports' Thane Wright (02:36:46).

On the 21-mile short course, the fastest time was posted by Sport Men 19-34 divisional winner Greg Sagan. Sagan's time of 01:49:52 was just under six minutes faster than any of the other five competitors in his division. It also bested Fred Fischer, the winner of the 24-rider Sport Men 35-49 division, by a mere 13 seconds.

Competition was also tight between the winners of the Open Women 45+ and Sport Women divisions to see who rode to the fastest female time on the 21-mile course. In the end, Tokyo Joes' Courtney Shelden, who won the Sport Women division, completed the course in 02:13:15, which was 18 seconds faster than the winner of the Open Women 45+ division, Holly Thompson (02:13:33).

Sunday's event saw riders begin near the intersection of French Gulch Road and Midnight Sun Road in the Wellington Neighborhood. The 30-mile long course then required cyclists to climb a total of 4,800 feet while the 21-mile short long course gained 3,000 feet.

The long course subsequently took riders through some of Breckenridge's most revered mountain biking terrain, including the Middle and Upper Flume trails, Heinous Hill and Nightmare on Baldy. The short course did not include the first part of the long course, namely those Flume trails and Heinous Hill. Rather, the course switchbacked up Prospect Hill and down the Sidedoor Trail adjacent to Mineral Hill before reconnecting with the rest of the long course in time for the Turk's Trail, Nightmare on Baldy, Baker's Tank and Boreas Pass Road terrain.

The Ullr Bike fat bike race in early January is the next scheduled Maverick Sports event.
