Summit Mountain Challenge turns 30 at 2016 Frisco Roundup MTB race (photos)

That's how you celebrate your 30th birthday.

On Wednesday, about 250 youth and adult mountain bikers collected just past the battered tubing hill snow at Frisco Adventure Park for the first race of the Summit Mountain Challenge Series, the Frisco Roundup. It's traditionally the first event in the 30-year-old series, and, as usual, it drew a major crowd of newbies, veterans and a few local pros.

It might be the first race of the season, but after a long and bike-less summer, it wasn't a walk in the park. No, it was a grind: the men's and women's pro divisions made three laps on the 6-mile course at the Frisco Peninusla for a total of 21 miles on rocky, rooty, whipfast singletrack with views of Lake Dillon. Luckily for all, the route from Jeff Westcott and his crew at Maverick Sports was light on the vertical (around 400 feet of gain) and ended with a fun berm track at the Frisco bike park before crossing the finish.

In the men's pro division, local MTB animal Mike Schilling — he of race plate No. 1 — edged out Nick Frey of Boo Bicycles by more than a minute, 1:35:04 to Frey's 1:36:31, for the first overall title of the 30th anniversary season. Nick Truitt of Breck Bike Guides rounded out the overall men's podium in third with a time of 1:39:20.

For the women, Amy Freeman went tire-to-tire with Sydney Fox of Breck Bike Guides for most of the race before pulling away in the third lap. Freeman finished with a 1:48:09, a full two minutes faster than Fox with 1:50:14.

Only five minutes behind Freeman and Fox was the fastest youngster on the course, Summit High School's Ezra Smith. The 16-year-old defending high school mountain bike champ finished at 1:55:52 for third overall.
