Tiger girls dominate Elizabeth, 7-0

ELIZABETH – Touchdown, Summit.Wrong sport, but you wouldn’t have known it from the score Friday night. Summit High School’s girls soccer team made it look easy in a thorough 7-0 shutout of Elizabeth on the road – no small feat for the Tigers, who had failed to score in three of their four previous matches.Sophomore Hannah Harvey finished with a hat trick and junior Emma Koenig added two goals for Summit, which improved to 4-5-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the 4A Jeffco League. The Cardinals, who usually play Summit tight, dropped to 2-10 and 1-7.”They played their passing game,” SHS coach Stephanie Johnson said of her team. “That’s what we strive for, is to get our short passing game going. It’s what we work on during our inside practices. They looked great. It was fun to watch.”Not as fun for Elizabeth. With Koenig and Harvey leading the offensive attack up front, and senior midfielders Katie Hartman and Courtney Wade adding a goal apiece, Summit never let the Cardinals into the match. The Tigers scored from inside and out, and goalie Emily Hawkins secured the goose egg in net.Koenig and Harvey buried all five of their goals from inside the 18-yard line after creating chances with sweet passing and solid ball handling. Each of their successful shots was precisely placed, Johnson said.On the other side of the 18, Wade and Hartman both rifled shots into an upper corner of the net for their first goals of the season.Summit, which is tied for sixth in the league, still has a shot to finish above .500 with two games remaining. The first of those is set for Wednesday afternoon at Ralston Valley.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 13630, or at doneil@summitdaily.com.
