Tiger runners earn top times

With 12 of the team’s 21 runners finishing in career-best times, the Summit High cross country team had an impressive day at the Grand Junction Invitational of Friday, despite temperatures over 90 degrees.

The Tiger girls – who had their top-five runners all finish within 45 seconds of each other – were fourth out of 10 teams, while the boys were 11th.

“It was a really exciting race,” SHS head coach Heather Quarantillo said. “We’d never done this race before, and we wanted to see what our competition (for the Western Slope regional) would be. We saw what teams we need to catch and what teams will be trying to chase us down.”

On the girls’ side, the Tigers had an impressive showing against the teams they’ll face at season’s end. Summit was just one point behind third-place Montrose and bested Eagle Valley by 20 points. The Tigers also finished well ahead of Glenwood Springs.

And it was all due to the Tigers’ team effort on the course.

Senior Cali Greksa led Summit in 18th place with a time of 21:43, and Katherine Pappas (22nd, 21:55), Tess Olson (25th, 22:23), Julia Hayes (27th, 22:26) and Sydney Stein (29th, 22:29) were all close behind her.

In the boys’ race, Summit was led by freshman Liam Meirow, who finished in 18:56 and 25th place. Senior Emmett Bailey was next in 33rd place (19:11), and Troy Meeker (57th), Duncan Koehn (70th) and Robert Koegel (96th) rounded out the scoring runners for the Tigers.

For the team’s second race of the season, Quarantillo was pleased with how much time each of the Tigers took off their scores, especially given the conditions.

“Last week (at Beaver Creek) the course was so hilly, and (Friday) it was so hot out, I feel it’s really made our team tougher by working through it,” the coach said.

The Tigers are back in action Tuesday, when they travel to the Chatfield Challenge at 3:30 p.m.
