Tigers alpine team carries out fifth sweep of season

AVON – Twelve races – 11 victories. The Summit High School alpine ski team wrapped up a near-perfect regular season Friday by sweeping a slalom at Beaver Creek.Led by Friday’s overall winner Zach Fretz, runner-up Fletcher McDonald and Hunter Black (eighth) the Tiger boys made it six for six on the season. The Lady Tigers, who won all of their races this season except a slalom at Loveland where they took third, were led by Alex Guras (first place), Leah Canfield (fifth) and Erin Breslin (seventh).

“It’s hard to believe they’ve done that well,” said SHS coach Tory Hauser, who hasn’t seen either of his teams go undefeated during his five-year tenure. “But now comes crunch time – states. Everyone’s going to start with a clean slate.”In all, Hauser plans to send 32 racers (19 boys, 13 girls) to the state meet at Vail Feb. 15-16. “When you consider there’s going to be about 60 guys and 60 girls there, (our number of qualifiers) is unbelievable,” Hauser said. “This is definitely the most kids I’ve ever sent to state.”

Steamboat was the boys runner-up on Friday, followed by Battle Mountain. On the girls side it was Battle Mountain then Steamboat finishing behind the Tigers.Like the other 12 teams competing at Beaver Creek, Summit battled frigid, wintery conditions.”It was hard on the kids and coaches,” Hauser said. “It was a long lift ride and ski down to the course – no one could ever get warm.”
