GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” A long day of cold rain wasn’t enough to keep 18 high school track and field teams from competing at the Demon Invitational in Glenwood Springs on Saturday.

“It was a miserable day,” Summit coach Kristy McClain said. “But we made the best of it.”

According to McClain, the Demon Invitational provided her team with a chance to assess the level of competition in other parts of the state.

“There were a lot of Western Slope schools that we had never seen before,” McClain said. “I think we were the only Jeffco team there.”

The Tiger girls team mustered a fifth-place finish in the large event, while their male counterparts took 12th.

The Tigers’ top finisher on the day was Mackenzie Jones, who took second in the triple jump. Saturday’s invitational was Jones’ first of the season after she joined the team late in order to complete her competitive ski season.

Jones’ debut proved auspicious, despite the challenging conditions.

“The sand was dense and thick with water,” McClain said. “It looked miserable to land in but (Jones) really stepped up to the plate.”

Summit’s Katie Sodergren finished one place behind Jones in the triple jump and Nadi DeJulio took third in the high jump.

On the track, the Lady Tigers were led by Mallory Clark (second in the 400-meter dash) and Catherine Clark (third in 100 hurdles).

Sophomore Helaman Salas had a strong performance for Summit by taking fifth in the long jump and fifth in the 1,600 relay along with Matt Bowers, Brady Brunvand, and Brian Stoneback.

According to McClain, Salas has proven to be one of the team’s young leaders.

“You could tell he was highly focused and ready to go before each of his events,” the coach said. “He’s always working to improve himself. It helps motivate the other kids a lot.”

The Tigers will travel to Jeffco Stadium for the Jeffco 10 relays this week.
